GeekMag Wordpress Theme
Thank you for purchasing our theme ! Please take the time to read through the following sections before asking for support. As many support related questions can be answered simply by re-reading the documentation.
1 - First Steps
Installation - First Steps
The first thing you need to do when you want to install a new WordPress theme is to login to your site admin page. Once there, go to Appearance -> Themes. Here, you will see all the themes you have currently installed in your application. To add another one, simply click on the Install Themes tab. Upload the zip package which you have downloaded from Themeforest from your local hard drive.
If you want to use the theme with all available features, you should upload and activate all required plugins. After the installation of the theme, you will see a message about them. Click "Begin Installing Plugins", install the plugins and activate them.
Loading Demo Content - First Steps
To upload the demo content (posts,pages,menus etc.) to your website, download the following zip file;
Open the zip file. You will find demo.xml file.You can use WordPress import tool to upload this xml file to your website.
For more information about importing content in WordPress; please visit wordpress.org
After the demo installation, you should set up sidebars ,select a front page and set up Appearance->Theme Settings manually. Please read the following sections for more information.
Creating Front Page & Blog Page - First Steps
First of all, you should create a new page for your frontpage display.
Go to Settings->Reading and select in the drop-down box this page for the front page display.
To create a blog page, create a blank page.
Go to Settings->Reading and select in the drop-down box the name of the Page that will now contain your latest posts. You can also use one of the blog page templates to create a page which displays all your posts. For more information please look at Page Templates section.
Adding Logo - First Steps
You can upload your logo from Appearance->Theme Settings->Header.
You can create menus from Appearance->Menus page. After creating your menus, you must manage your menu location. There are two menu location in GeekMag. "Main menu" and "Top Menu".

Custom Menu
Another way to use a WordPress menu is using custom menu widget. You can use this widget to add your menus to any widget area.
To add the social media icons to your homepage, just fill the required fields and click "Add Another Icon" to add a new icon or click "Save".
You can also use SiteOrigin Social Media Buttons widget to add social icons to any widget area. To use this widget, you should upload/activate SiteOrigin Widget Bundle plugin.
Page Templates - First Steps
- Default Template
- This is the default full width page template.
- Page - Sidebar
- There is a sidebar field on this template. You can add widgets to "Main Sidebar" from Appearance->Widgets page.
- Page Builder Templates
- If you want to use Page Builder, we recommend you to use these page templates. There isn't any page title field and white background on these page templates.
- Blog Templates
- Blog templates display all the posts on different page layouts.
Live Search - First Steps
As visitors type words into your site's search box, the plugin continually queries WordPress, looking for search results that match what the user has typed so far.
The live search technique means that most people will find the results they are looking for before they finish typing their query, and it saves them the step of having to click a submit button to get their search results.
After activating the plugin, go to Settings->Live Search->Appearance page to activate GeekMag stylings for the search box. Check "Theme-specific" box and click "Save Changes".
If you want to add your own stylings, check "Custom" box.
2 - Theme Settings
General - Theme Settings
- Custom CSS
- You can add all your custom CSS here and avoid modifying the core theme files, since that'll make upgrading the theme problematic. Your custom CSS will be loaded after the theme's stylesheets, which means that your rules will take precedence. Just add your CSS here for what you want to change, you don't need to copy all the theme's style.css content.
- Enable Loading Animation
- To enable page loading animation, switch on.
- Custom Loading Image
- You can upload your own loading image from this field. Recommended image size is 64x64 px.
- Dropdown Menu Width
- You can change the default width of the dropdowns on the main menu.
- Remove Search Box
- To remove the search box in the top menu bar, switch on.
- Disable Lightbox
- Lightbox plugin is used only on galleries (gallery format). To disable lightbox plugin, switch on.
- Contact form 7 loader
- Recommended image size is 26x26 px.
Header - Theme Settings
- Remove Top Bar
- To remove the top bar (top menu, social icons and search box), switch on.
- Header Layout
- There are 4 options.
- Logo(left) + Banner(right): This is the default layout.
- Logo(center) + Banner(center): You can change your logo and banner placements.
- FullWidth Logo: If you want to add a fullwidth image to the header instead of a small logo, you should select this option. There isn't any banner field on this layout and recommended size for the logo is 1480x300 px.
- Logo(left) + Menu(right): You can change your logo and menu placements.
- Logo
- You can upload your logo from this field.
- Logo Height
- Maximum height of the logo (px). You can play with this value to make your logo bigger or smaller.
- Padding
- Space around the logo (and the ads).
- Max. Logo Width
- Maximum width of the logo on mobile devices (px).
- Header Background Color
- Background color of the header.
- Header Background Image
- You can add a background image to the header. This is optional.
- Header Background Image Style
- Responsive: Fills header with single image. Scales image as needed.
- Repeat Background Image: Repeats the same image to fill the container without scaling.
Sticky - Theme Settings
- Activate Sticky Menu
- If you activate sticky menu, the main menu will stay fixed when you scroll the page.
- Disable Sticky Sidebar Plugin
- Sticky Sidebar plugin is used on sidebars and on masonry grids. To disable sticky sidebar plugin, switch on.
- Breakpoint
- If screen width is less than breakpoint, the plugin will be disabled.
- Additional Margin Top
- An additional top margin in pixels.
- Additional Margin Bottom
- An additional bottom margin in pixels.
- Sidebar behavior
- Sidebar behavior when you scroll the page.
- Masonry behavior
- Masonry behavior when you scroll the page.
- Page Builder behavior
- Page Builder behavior when you scroll the page.
You can enable sticky sidebar plugin on columns from layout settings of the row.It may not work properly with sticky masonry columns, so use it wisely...
If scrolling is not working properly when you activate sticky, change collapse order of the row and try again.
Blog - Theme Settings
- Blog Subtitle
- Subtitle of your archive pages (Optional).
- Remove Author Links
- There is an author box at the bottom of the single post pages. To remove it, switch on.
- Remove Author Box
- There is an author box at the bottom of the single post pages. To remove it, switch on.
- Remove Social Sharing Buttons
- There are social sharing buttons at the bottom of the single post pages. To remove it, switch on.
- Remove Post Navigation
- There are next/previous post links at the bottom of the single post pages. To remove it, switch on.
- Archive, search page layout
- You can change default page layout of the standard WordPress pages like archive and search pages.
- Author page layout
- You can change default page layout of the standard WordPress pages like author pages.
- Activate Related Posts
- It uses post tags to find related articles. Only posts with featured images will be displayed.
- Maximum number of related posts
- Maximum number of related posts.
Fonts - Theme Settings
GeekMag supports Google Web Fonts. To change default fonts, please follow the following steps;
Choose a font and click "plus" button on the top right corder of the font. After that copy the codes (like on the screenshots) and paste them to the fields on the theme settings page.
Don't forget to check "customize" tab. You may need to check some boxes on this section.
You also can change the default font sizes from this theme settings section.
If you need to change a specific element's (or a 3rd party plugin element) font-size you can use Custom CSS plugin.
bbPress & BuddyPress - Theme Settings
- bbPress Layout
- GeekMag is compatible with bbPress. You can change the layout of the bbPress pages from this field.
- BuddyPress default profile & group cover image
- GeekMag is compatible with BuddyPress. You can change the default cover images from these fields.
Facebook Comments - Theme Settings
You can add Facebook comments field to your posts.
In order to use Facebook comments on your site you will need to create a Facebook app. If you have previously created an app for your site, then you can use that app ID here. Otherwise, you will need to create a new app.
Simply visit the Facebook Apps page and click on the create new app button. You will need to provide a name for your app and click on the Create App ID button.
Facebook will now create a new app for you to use, and it will redirect you to your app dashboard. You will notice your app ID displayed there.
You need to copy and paste this app ID into your theme settings. But before you can do that, you would need to configure the app to work on your website. Click on the Settings link and then click on +Add Platform button.
A new popup window would appear on the screen. You need to click on website to select it as your platform.
This will add a new ‘Website’ section in your app’s settings page where you can enter your WordPress site’s address.
After saving your settings, you can now copy the app ID and paste in the theme’s settings page.
- Activate Facebook Comments
- To activate Facebook comments, switch on.
- Title
- Title of the Facebook comments field (Optional).
- Color Scheme
- Color Scheme of the Facebook comments field.
- Number of comments
- The number of comments to show by default.
- Data Order by
- Social: This is also known as "Top". The comments plugin uses social signals to surface the highest quality comments. Comments are ordered so that the most relevant comments from friends and friends of friends are shown first, as well as the most-liked or active discussion threads.
- Newest:Comments are shown in the opposite order that they were posted, with the newest comments at the top and the oldest at the bottom.
- Oldest:Comments are shown in the order that they were posted, with the oldest comments at the top and the newest at the bottom.
Colors - Theme Settings
You can change default colors of the theme from this section easily.
If you need to change a specific element's (or a 3rd party plugin element) color you can use Custom CSS plugin.
SiteOrigin CSS Editor
If you want more control over your website design, we suggest you to use SiteOrigin CSS plugin.
SiteOrigin CSS is the simple, yet powerful CSS editor for WordPress. It gives you visual controls that let you edit the look and feel of your site in real-time.
3 - Posts

An excerpt in WordPress is a term used for article summary with a link to the whole entry. An excerpt can be auto generated by a WordPress theme.
Another way to create excerpts for a WordPress post is by entering the summary of an article in Excerpt field on Post Edit screen. This field is not displayed in the post edit screen by default. To enable it a user needs to click on Screen Options button on the top right corner of post edit screen and then enable it.
Layout
You have to option for the single post page layout. If you don't want to display a sidebar on the page, select "Fullwidth".
Subtitle
You can add a subtitle to your posts or pages. It is recommended for SEO.
Header Layout
The header layout of the page/post. You can change default header layout from Appearance->Theme Settings->Header.
Featured Image
The Featured Image (also known as post thumbnail) is a WordPress theme feature which allows you to add a representative image to the posts.
Post Formats
A Post Format is a piece of meta information that can be used by a theme to customize its presentation of a post. You can change how each post looks by choosing a Post Format from a radio-button list.
Gallery Format
To add an image gallery to a post, you should select this post format. After selecting "Gallery", "Format:Gallery" box will be visible.
After adding images to the gallery, you will see a new slider at the top of the post content.
Thumbnail Carousel
If you check "Enable thumbnail carousel" box, an image carousel will be displayed on masonry grid layouts.
Link Format
If you select link format, you should add the destination url to the "Format:Link" box. Your visitors will be redirected to this link when they click on this post.
Image Format
If you select image format, "Format: Image" box will be visible.
Masonry Style
If you select "Background Image", your post will look different on masonry grid layouts.
Animated Gif
If you want to add an animated gif, use this field to add/upload your gif.
Single Post Image
Featured image or animated gif can be displayed on the top of the post content.
Quote Format
If you select quote format, the post title will be displayed as a blockquote. You can use subtitle field to add a name to the bottom of the blockquote.
Video Format
You can add a video to the top of the post content. Just paste the video link to the video url field ( Supports only Youtube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Vine, VideoPress or WordPress.tv )
Audio Format
If you select this post format, you can add a Spotify or Soundcloud url to the Audio url field.
Reviews
There is a built-in review system in GeekMag. You should check "Add a review to this post" box, to activate the review and to view the available options.
Shortcodes
You can use shortcode menu which is on the editor to add shortcodes to your posts/pages.
Accordion - Shortcodes
Adds an accordion. All geekmagaccordion
shortcodes must be in geekmagaccordioncontainer
shortcode.
You can find all icon names at official Font Awesome page.
Tabs - Shortcodes
Adds a tabs. All geekmagtab
shortcodes must be in geekmagtabgroup
shortcode.
type: default or vertical
URL: Destination url
Button text: The text of the button
Open in a new tab: yes or no
Style: large, medium or small
You can use this shortcode to add a highlighted text.
Categories
Category is one of the pre-defined taxonomies in WordPress. It is used to sort and group content into different sections. A website publishing content on a variety of topics can divide their website into sections using categories.
You can add/edit a category from the Posts -> Categories screen. Each category on the website can have its own layout and description.
Rating System
To use this feature you should upload/activate "Besocial Rating System" plugin which is in the theme package.
After the plugin activation, you will see a new menu item on your dashboard. You can turn on or off like&dislike buttons from this settings page.
There is also a meta box on the add new/edit post page. You can change like and dislike numbers from this box as you want.
4 - Page Builder
You should install/activate following plugins to use the page builder and all available widgets to build your pages;

Click add widget button;
Click "GeekMag Widgets" to see all available widgets in the GeekMag Features plugin.
GeekMag Post Slider
Displays a post slider.
- Title & Subtitle
- You can add a title and a subtitle to the widget (optional).
- Post Settings
- Build Posts Query
- Click on the "Build Post Query" button to launch the Build Post Query dialogue window.
- Post In: Here is where you will enter the Post ID’s you wish to include in your widget. If you do not know the ID’s you can click on the "Select Posts" button to open the Select Posts dialogue and search for the posts.
- To change the order of the posts click, hold and drag it to its new location. To delete a post from your widget, select it and click on the X in the top right hand corner.
- Once you have finished selecting posts, click “Finish Selection”.
- Taxonomies: Here is where you specify any custom taxonomies.
- Order By: Click on the drop down menu to specify how to order posts within the post carousel. The default order is “By Include Order” meaning as they were added when they were selected. Click on the round arrow icon to specify descending or ascending.
- Posts Per Page: Set the number of selected posts you wish to display in the post carousel by adjusting the value in the Posts Per Page field.

- Fade Animation
- To enable fade animation, check this box.

- Display Navigation Arrows
- To display navigation arrows, check this box.
- Text Settings
- This section contains the settings of the texts on the slides.
- Button Settings
- You can add a button to the bottom of the widget. If you don't add a link to the button, it will be not visible.
GeekMag Fullwidth Post Slider
Displays a fullwidth post slider.
We recommend you to add this widget into a fullwidth row.

GeekMag YouTube TV
YouTube TV displays recent videos and playlists from any selected YouTube channel.
- API KEY (REQUIRED)
- To use YouTube TV first of all you have to obtain an API Key from Google's Developer Console.
- To obtain your API Key you can follow this guide using steps 1 to 3;
- Getting Started with the YouTube Data API
- Then:
- 4. under APIs & auth > Credentials > Create new Key > (Select) Browser Key
- 5. (Recommended) Set any referrers to your domain to prevent unauthorized use of your key.
- 6. (Optional) Additionally disabling any other unused APIs that are enabled.
- YouTube Username
- By visiting the intended channel's Youtube home page. The URL should look like the following. Youtube username is "collegehumor";
- YouTube Channel ID
- Channel ID is the alternative of the username. You can enter channel id instead of username. "UCPDXXXJj9nax0fr0Wfc048g" is the id of the channel on the following example;
- Maximum number of the videos
- The number of the videos which you want to display on the right side of the slider.
- Activate Playlist
- If you activate this feature, your playlists will be displayed in the dropdown on the slider.
- Maximum number of the playlists
- The number of the playlists which you want to display in the dropdown.
- Height (px)
- Height of the slider. We suggest you to add YouTube TV into a fullwidth column and enter 560 to the height field.
GeekMag Post Carousel
Displays a post carousel.
- Title & Subtitle
- You can add a title and a subtitle to the widget (optional).
- Post Settings
- Build Posts Query
- Click on the "Build Post Query" button to launch the Build Post Query dialogue window.
- Post In: Here is where you will enter the Post ID’s you wish to include in your widget. If you do not know the ID’s you can click on the "Select Posts" button to open the Select Posts dialogue and search for the posts.

- Once you have finished selecting posts, click “Finish Selection”.

Displays your posts in a masonry grid.

Displays your posts in a list.
- Title & Subtitle
- You can add a title and a subtitle to the widget (optional).
- Post Settings
- Build Posts Query
- Click on the "Build Post Query" button to launch the Build Post Query dialogue window.
- Post In: Here is where you will enter the Post ID’s you wish to include in your widget. If you do not know the ID’s you can click on the "Select Posts" button to open the Select Posts dialogue and search for the posts.
- To change the order of the posts click, hold and drag it to its new location. To delete a post from your widget, select it and click on the X in the top right hand corner.
- Once you have finished selecting posts, click “Finish Selection”.

- Posts Per Page: Set the number of selected posts you wish to display in the post carousel by adjusting the value in the Posts Per Page field.

- Display the first post large
- If you check this box, the first post in the list will be bigger.
- Button Settings
- You can add a button to the bottom of the widget. If you don't add a link to the button, it will be not visible.
GeekMag Post List Carousel
Displays your posts in a carousel.
- Title & Subtitle
- You can add a title and a subtitle to the widget (optional).
- Post Settings
- Build Posts Query
- Click on the "Build Post Query" button to launch the Build Post Query dialogue window.
- Post In: Here is where you will enter the Post ID’s you wish to include in your widget. If you do not know the ID’s you can click on the "Select Posts" button to open the Select Posts dialogue and search for the posts.
- To change the order of the posts click, hold and drag it to its new location. To delete a post from your widget, select it and click on the X in the top right hand corner.
- Once you have finished selecting posts, click “Finish Selection”.
- Taxonomies: Here is where you specify any custom taxonomies.
- Order By: Click on the drop down menu to specify how to order posts within the post carousel. The default order is “By Include Order” meaning as they were added when they were selected. Click on the round arrow icon to specify descending or ascending.
- Posts Per Page: Set the number of selected posts you wish to display in the post carousel by adjusting the value in the Posts Per Page field.
